Empowering Communities Through Technology: Wimmer Solutions’ STEM Lab in the Philippines

At Wimmer Solutions, the belief that “care creates community” is more than a motto—it’s a guiding principle. For years, the technology consulting firm has supported US-based organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of King County, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and Special Olympics. "We've always believed here at Wimmer Solutions that if you're going to be doing work in a region or an area, part of what comes with that is to give back," Founder and CEO Matt Sauri stated. "But as we look to make a difference, we've found it to be a natural fit to do things regarding Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)."

As the world grows increasingly digital, Wimmer has turned its focus toward a cause that not only gives back, but also helps level the playing field for future generations: access to technology and STEM education.

Bringing Technology Where It’s Needed Most

The idea for the STEM Lab initiative was born from a desire to provide meaningful support in underserved communities. During a visit to the Philippines, Senior Strategic Advisor Eric Koivisto worked with his network that identified Mindanao—a region long affected by conflict—as an underserved area where technology could create a transformative impact. Many students there had never even touched a laptop, leaving them at a disadvantage compared to peers in larger cities.

Recognizing this gap, we committed to building a fully equipped STEM Lab at Gumayan Integrated School in Davao, Mindanao. To make it possible, Eric worked with HR Manager Lorelei Cordero and IT Coordinator Noel Briones, who connected the organization with local partners, community leaders, and even the Philippine military to safely access the remote mountain community.

Overcoming Challenges With Care and Commitment

The journey was anything but simple. Our team had to travel miles of rugged terrain by motorcycle, often through rain and slippery mountain tracks, to reach the school. Teachers in Gumayan themselves made these difficult commutes regularly just to serve their students—an act that inspired us to match their dedication.

Once on site, we assessed the needs of both the school and the surrounding community. The project went beyond donating laptops; it included installing solar panels, batteries, and Starlink internet access to ensure that technology could actually be used. By addressing the lack of electricity and connectivity, we enabled the school to take its first significant step into the digital age.

More Than Laptops: A Pathway to Hope

This initiative was never just about hardware. It was about giving hope and opportunity. With laptops, internet access, and renewable power, students in Gumayan can now develop digital skills comparable to those of their peers in Manila or Seattle. Teachers can expand their lessons, and parents can witness new opportunities for their children.

The project also reflects Wimmer’s identity as a technology consulting company. By leveraging its strengths, the company provides solutions that directly empower the next generation. 

A Long-Term Commitment

Importantly, the STEM Lab has evolved from a one-time project to a continuous initiative. It marks the beginning of a lasting partnership with the Gumayan school. The team continues to work with suppliers and community members to improve internet reliability, expand the lab’s capabilities, and provide ongoing mentorship.

The vision is to inspire students and families alike—to see technology not as something distant, but as a tool within reach. As Matt noted, the dream is that one day a farmer might see their child working on a laptop and realize that digital skills are possible for their family too.
